Khaki Shorts Goes Fishing & Fishin' For a Cure

I'm soo excited about my newest project!  "Khaki Shorts Goes Fishing" is a short picture book with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Fishin' For a Cure, a charity for breast cancer research.  The story behind the book is pretty amazing if you ask me.  In the summer of 2012, I was displaying my artwork at a wholesale show,  Americasmart in Atlanta, GA.  I wanted to make a big, bold statement in my booth to attract buyers.  So of course what better way than to paint two huge blue dogs in Christmas hats and colorful trees.  Just my style and I loved it.  On the first day of the show, I met two very kind and amazing women, Kris & Krystal and they loved it too!.  Little did I know those two big bold blue dogs would initiate something even bigger and better!  Kris told me about her dog, Khaki Shorts.  I giggled to myself thinking "who names their dog Khaki Shorts?!".  Kris proceeded to tell me Khaki has her own Facebook page.  At that time, I never heard of such a funny thing...a dog named Khaki Shorts and she has her own doggie Facebook page.  Really?  I giggled again.  No, really??  After my schlep home, I logged onto Facebook and looked up Khaki Shorts and there she was!  A beautiful yellow Lab with her status "Today, I'm going fishing!".  I laughed out loud sitting in my room all by myself.  That was it, Khaki Shorts became alive in my world.  I immediately painted "Khaki Shorts Goes Fishing" and sent a print to Kris and Krystal.  They loved it as much as I did.  Skip ahead a year and after tons of art shows up and down the eastern seaboard, everybody loved Khaki Shorts!   As I sat in my computer room all by myself, I wrote a short poem about Khaki Shorts on a fishing trip and illustrated the 16 page book.  This is where I hit a road block.  Although the idea was clear in my mind, I was having trouble meshing the pictures and words and it wasn't coming together.  Business was crazy busy and Khaki Shorts, the book, was edged to the back burner.  In January 2014, Kris and Krystal stopped by my booth at Americasmart in Atlanta once again.  This time it was a huge Khaki Shorts Goes Fishing canvas print in the front of my booth greeting wholesale buyers.  Kris asked about the book and I told her about the trouble I was having.  "Kris, I need to give you something in return.  It's only right" I said.  "Everybody loves your dog!"  Kris replied as she has in the past, "No, I don't want anything".  Feeling frustrated and not knowing what to do, I figured some answer would come up...somewhere!  I don't even know how it happened, Krystal brought up "Fishin' for a Cure" and how they have a charity event in Emerald Isle, NC where women get together and fish to raise money for breast cancer research.  There it was, my opportunity to give back!   Breast cancer has affected my family deeply and it was a cause that I truly believe in, helping women beat this disease.  That was it... a portion of the proceeds of my little picture book "Khaki Shorts Goes Fishing" will benefit Fishin' for a Cure supporting breast cancer research.  Perfect!  After the show, I went home and tweaked the words, adjusted the format and it all fit together.  It was as if Khaki Shorts was waiting for this to happen.  The finishing touch on the inside page read "This book is dedicated to my Mom, a breast cancer survivor".  "Khaki Shorts Goes Fishing" is in the process of being printed and will be available soon...and I can't wait!  If you are interested in this delightful book for yourself, please don't hesitate to let me know and I will put you on the Khaki list:)

Hi Nettie! I’m excited about your efforts to support Fishin’ For A Cure! Would love to be on the “Khaki list” to give this to my friend, Gwen, a 12 year breast cancer survivor and soon to be first time grandmother, who was also the proud owner of two goldens. “Khaki Shorts Goes Fishing” sounds like it would be ideal for Gwen to share with her granddaughter in the future.
I had the pleasure of meeting you at a craft show years ago. You spoke of being a teacher
( science, if I recall?) and your love of colors and how your style was created. I have been a fan ever since.
Gwen retired from teaching and has been among the top ten fund raisers in the Susan G. Komen 3 day Walk for the Cure in her hometown of Chicago and in her birthplace, Philadelphia.
Your book would be a perfect gift! I am wondering if I might somehow reserve an autographed copy personalized to Gwen.
Thank you for your beautiful, uplifting artwork and for your efforts in a great cause.
    Wishing you all the best,
    ~bonnie
